SHATTER TEXT SHOT BREAKDOWN:
Once we completed “The Bullet” training DVD, we went to work on the promo video featuring a 3D shattering text effect. This promo has generated a lot of excitement and I wanted to explain the basics of what was needed. Let me just say, it wasn’t easy.

The text was created in 3Ds Max and fractured into pieces. These pieces were then linked to a particle system, where each piece was represented by one particle. The system was setup with gravity and a floor plane deflector. A collision event triggered the particles ‘explosion’ and the pieces went flying. I used Action Movie Essentials for the fiery explosion along with Trapcode’s Horizon for the Sky Background in AE.

The setup for this effect took many, many hours to complete as well as several unsuccessful tests. A tutorial specifically on this title is not currently planned but I will experiment with the possibility of a tutorial if it can fit our normal tutorial platform. In the mean time a more detailed breakdown will be released along with images and my experiences with this shot.

NEW MOTION GRAPHICS TUTORIAL:
I’ve been experimenting with this Fold-Out Animation where After Effects Layers are linked together to form a fluid animation as layers animate sequentially. As you can imagine some interesting expressions will be used to make it easy and robust.

如何为了在网上发布而压缩视频? 这是个问题。当然你有很对的选择,但有一点共识就是我们都不想是由我们的创作工具,像是Premiere或是After Effects来完成它. 尽管你可以使用像是MP4以及 H.264这两种格式, 但是对于处理压缩来说,并不是和理想的。

我使用Camtasia Studio来录制并渲染我的教程,输出成为FLV格式(flash视频)虽然结果很不错,但仍需调整。新版的camtasia studio拥有了一个强大的新功能,尽管还缺少一些重要的东西… 如上所示另一个好的独立的应用程序叫做Sorenson Squeeze,允许分批处理的许多的格式,但是处理某些格式需要购买该软件。有人认为用After Effects输出成 Flash Video也是不错的,但是你要为它编写一些代码,使之嵌入到Web网页中。

如何设置渲染?

对于许多的渲染设置, 我曾问我自己,在After Effects中什么才是最好的方式。当然这需要考虑到很对方面。 这个视频将通过网络进行共同渲染? 如果是这样的话,每台计算机必须在同一时间选择一个帧。因此,您不能使用一个单一的文件格式像是:AVI 、MOV。取而代之,对于未压缩的图像数据,像序列图像PNG或TIFF格式是一个不错的选择。For the average Joe F. Ex,单一文件渲染是一个不错的的解决方案。

对于渲染设置来说,我建议选择QuickTime Movie。当您在设定您的输出模块以及编解码器时选择使用Quicktime的格式。这里我有三个建议,我提供提供对于一分钟视频的三种格式。

1. PhotoJPG (清晰度:95%)

  • 较小的文件体积
  • 压缩快速
  • 多次压缩质量明显下降

2. PNG

  • 一分钟的渲染花费了8:44分

3. Animation

  • 多次压缩画质没有降低
  • 一分钟的视频文件(@ 864×480 29.97fps)体积为1.9 GBs
  • 一分钟的渲染花费了1:35分

因此,正如你所看到的,如果您的硬盘有足够的空间,Animation是个不错的选择!但是JPG凭借较小的体积却拥有高清晰的画质。而PNG又有高清晰度的画质却要花费很长的时间进行渲染。

总的来说PhotoJPG是个不错的选择,对于那些对于品质要求较高朋友,建议您选择animation。

不要做:

  • 使用发行格式去进行渲染 (像是H.264, sorenson或者MPEGs)
  • 半途而废(Jump off of a moving train)(编者注:比喻的很形象)

用Alpha渲染


When you create a title or graphic in After effects, you may want to composite the render over footage in your editing application instead of AE. To do this you need to simply export your video with the alpha/transparency information.

To render it this way, add your comp tot the render queue (be sure to have no background layer) and use QuickTime as the output format. Select a codec like Animation or PNG and be sure to change the depth to RGB + Alpha. This option is not available for all codecs.

Some editing applications like Vegas video require you to set the properties of the footage to premultiplied so that it will interpret the transparency correctly.

Using mp4 or h.264 when compressing through QuickTime can make the final video look washed out. This is a common problem that seemed to have no solution… until now. The gamma shift can actually be fixed inside QuickTime Pro without re-compressing your video by simply changing a few settings.

SOLUTION: After rendering into a QuickTime/h.264 file, open it up in QuickTime and select “Show Movie Properties.” Highlight the video track then click on the “Visual Settings” tab. Towards the bottom left you should see “Transparency” with a drop-down box next to it. Select “Blend” from the menu then move the “Transparency Level” slider to 100%. Choose “Straight Alpha” from the same drop-down and close the properties window and finally “Save.”

After Effects has this little things called expressions. You may have seen them in our tutorials. You may also fear it like the Chupacabra, but the fact is, they are here and they are real as are the goat eaters.

The majority of expressions I use are simple equations, so simple they can hardly be called equations. However they can be very powerful as well with a little bit of knowledge.

In the Demon Face Warp Tutorial we learned to reverse track by adding expressions. One expression reversed the rotation by multiplying it by -1.

Now I had a question about reverse scaling… I didn’t know, until now:

Basically you create a variable inside the final comp where you apply the reverse rotation expression but instead we alt click on the scale and write
m=100/comp(”yourPreComp”).layer(”originalLayer”.transform.scale[0];
value*m

So if m=400%, then 100/400=.25, and .25*100% is 25%. And 25% of the now 400 percent image is now back to the original size.
To create the layer variable, you can pickwhip the scale of the precomposed layer as shown in the tutorial. Then add [0] so that you only use one of the scale values for the width.

Try it out and hopefully you can use it in the future.

EDIT for Clarification: When you motion stabilizing something with 2 points you can calculate the rotation and scale from the Motion Tracking Menu, this scales up or down as needed to keep the 2 points the exact distance appart. Thanks for bringing this up Kyle, I’m tired too.
